The Improbable ACC Football Championship Game: Duke-Florida State

On Saturday, twentieth-ranked Duke will face top-ranked Florida State in the ACC Championship Game. The game will be played at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC. (balldurham.com).

On Saturday night, December 7, 20th-ranked Duke will play top-ranked Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Championship Game. It is one of the most surprising conference championship games in the history of the Football Bowl Subdivision, FBS.

The reason why the ACC Championship Game is so surprising is because of the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils are typically a very good basketball team. However, the football team is the complete opposite.

Last season, the Blue Devils finished the regular season with a 6-6 record and played in their first Bowl game since 1995. Cincinnati defeated them in the Belk Bowl, 48-34.

The Blue Devils entered the 2013 season with an all-time record of 464-490-31. The last time they accomplished consecutive winning seasons was 1988-1989, according to collegefootball.bz/duke.

Their success last season was not enough to warrant at least one website of predicting them to have a great finish in the ACC. CBSSports.com had eight College Football experts predict the ACC finish in August for the 2013 season and most of them predicted that the Blue Devils would finish last in the Coastal Division.

The Blue Devils proved them all wrong by defeating North Carolina on Saturday to earn their 10th victory of the season, 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the ACC. It is the first time in the Blue Devils' history that they won 10 games in a season and the victory propelled them to the program's first ACC Championship Game appearance.

They have defeated two top-25 teams this season, including a 13-10 victory against then 14th-ranked Virginia Tech on Oct. 26. The Blue Devils are heavy underdogs as they attempt to make their first BCS Bowl appearance in their program's history.

The Seminoles were much more likely to make the ACC Championship Game than the Blue Devils. Two of the CBSSports.com experts picked the Seminoles to win the Atlantic Division and the ACC Championship Game.

College football experts were skeptical about the Seminoles with redshirt freshman Jameis Winston replacing recent-graduate EJ Manuel at quarterback. Winston has had a Heisman Trophy-caliber season and has led his team to a 12-0 record.

The last time the Seminoles were undefeated was in 1999, 12-0. The Seminoles defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies, 46-29 to win the BCS Championship Game.

The Seminoles have defeated three top-25 teams this season, including a 51-15 victory against then third-ranked Clemson on Oct. 19.

The Seminoles will play in the BCS Championship Game with a victory on Saturday.

It will be very tough for the Blue Devils to pull off the huge upset win, but it could happen. The key for them is stopping Winston and the explosive Seminoles offense.

The Seminoles have scored at least 37 points in every game this season, leading to the second-best scoring offense in the nation. The Blue Devils have the 37th-best scoring defense, as they give up an average of 23-points-per-game.

The last time the Blue Devils won a 'big' game was in 1960. They defeated Arkansas 7-6 to win the Cotton Bowl.

The Blue Devils have never defeated the Seminoles, 0-18. If Winston performs on Saturday like he has this season, then the Blue Devils are unlikely to win the game.
