Who's The Better Point Guard Prospect: Dante Exum or Marcus Smart?

Currently, the best two Point Guard prospects in the 2014 Draft Class are Dante Exum and Marcus Smart. Both of them are guaranteed to be picked within the first seven names Adam Silver will call out. The big question heading into the draft is, who will be selected first?

Dante Exum

I won't get into too much on Dante Exum because I wrote an article (Dante Exum: Basketball's Best Kept Secret) a couple months ago, talking about his game, but I'll tell you this much at least; he's what you get when you combine Penny Hardaway, Russell Westbrook and Tony Parker. Exum has the potential to be the best player in this draft class and that is saying something. Even if he only reaches half his potential, the Aussie will still be a hell of a player. It's not like Dante Exum is some raw player, the kid has skill and there's no denying it. He's also not that bad a leader either, as he was one on the Australian U19 team.

Marcus Smart

Marcus Smart is a beast, plain and simple. He's 6'4, weighing in at 220 lbs, with amazing athleticism. To go along with his mad hops, Smart is a high-IQ Point Guard (pun intended), who is great at running the pick and roll. The fact that he's only averaging 3.9 APG attests more to the type of offense Oklahoma State runs, than it does to his passing ability or vision. The biggest thing about Smart is his leadership. He is one on and off the court, for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. In the game against Memphis, Marcus Smart had his best performance of the season, yet, by scoring 39 points (11-21 from the field, 5-10 from three, 12-16 from charity stripe), adding 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocks to complete his masterpiece of a performance. At one point, he scored 12 straight points for the Cowboys and had 26 points at halftime. Smart would've been selected 2nd overall in the 2013 NBA Draft, had he not chosen to stay for one more year of college. Although he won't be taken that early in the stacked 2014 Draft, he's improved from last year and whatever team takes him will be a lucky one.

Final Thoughts

Dante Exum is the low-risk, high-reward pick and Marcus Smart is the no-risk, potential to be high-reward pick. That's about as simple as I can put it.

Who's The Better Point Guard Prospect?

If I were an NBA GM, I would take Dante Exum because he is the better Point Guard prospect. Why? It's because he has a chance to be a better player than Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker and even if he isn't better than them, he's still a star in the league. Marcus Smart is no slacker himself and will be a great player in the NBA, possibly a star, but Exum is a can't-miss prospect and I wouldn't be surprised if he's taken first overall in the 2014 NBA Draft.

Comment below on who you think is the better Point Guard prospect. Is it Dante Exum? Marcus Smart? You decide.
