Jets Need To Rely On Chris Ivory

When the New York Jets signed Chris Ivory this offseason, many people didn't think too much of it. After all, he had spent the entirety of his career unable to break ahead of the New Orleans Saints' stable of running backs due to injuries nearly every year. When I heard about this signing, though, my expectations immediately shot through the roof.

I had watched Ivory explode onto the scene in 2010 with the Saints when he averaged over 5 yards per carry and rushed for over 700 yards. Over the last two seasons, he has kept that YPC right around 5, but like I said, he has had to deal with nagging injuries essentially every year. While these injuries may seem to disqualify him from being a workhorse-type running back, I tend to think differently.

Given that the Jets lost (if you want to call it that) Shonn Greene and Joe McKnight this offseason, they were in need of someone that would be able to help out a consistently medicore-at-best quarterback in Mark Sanchez who has needed a strong run game to be successful, or a rookie in Geno Smith. Given that both quarterbacks were in dire need of a capable running back, I thought we'd see Ivory featured heavily right out of the gate.

As we know, that is not the direction that the Jets decided to head in. Instead, they decided to have him split carries with Bilal Powell, who's track record (3.6 YPC) will not impress. Both of them struggled, with Powell averaging well below his career average, and Ivory getting only 15 yards on 10 carries.

The Jets won the game, but it was with no help from the ground. Geno Smith basically won the game on his own offensively (with a little help from Lavonte David), and it was clear that one of the two Jets backs would have to step up if the team wanted to compete in the AFC East this year.

Well on Thursday Night Football, they got their chance in the first divisional matchup of the year against the New England Patriots. Both of their backs improved, with Powell getting back to his underwhelming career average, and Ivory jumping up to 4.3. In this game, we saw some great burst from Ivory, but he wasn't without problems.

Like what has plagued him to this point in his career, Ivory fumbled in the 2nd quarter of the game. Regardless of that one instance, though, they need to start giving him the ball more often. By that, I mean anywhere from 20-30 carries per game.

This all goes backs to the fact that they're starting a rookie quarterback. Though he performed well in the first game, he faltered a little bit in the second. His stat line is a bit worse than he seems, as his receivers had a ton of costly drops (I'm looking at you, Clyde Gates), but it still was not his best. He threw 39 times, which is just way too many, especially given the weather conditions during the game.

Rex Ryan should be doing all he can to keep his job, and starting Ivory would be a good start. Yes, it may be taking a chance just given his injury history and fumbling, but his upside is so much higher than Bilal Powell's that it makes this decision a no-brainer.

AFC East Recap: Week 1

The AFC East has for the better part of this millennium always been ran by Tom Brady and the New England Patriots but this year the Miami Dolphins seem to be the only team with the talent and sustainability to dethrone the Pats from recapturing the Division crown. The Bills and Jets are in the rebuilding phase so don't expect much out of them this season. Week 1 gave us our 1^st look at all 4 teams in the AFC East so lets recap at everything that transpired on the first of many NFL sundays in 2013.

Game #1-New England Patriots:23 @ Buffalo Bills:21

This one was a lot closer than expected but the Patriots still managed to pick up the win at a rowdy Ralph Wilson Stadium. The game showcased 2 quarterbacks at 2 completely different ends of the spectrum. Tom Brady has multiple super bowl rings and is a sure fire hall of famer, EJ Manuel is fresh out of Florida State making his rookie debut for the Bills.

The game started like anybody would expect by the Patriots jumping out to a 10-0 lead due in large part to a touchdown reception from Julian Edleman. Then the Bills gathered some momentum as Da Norris Searcy recovered a Stevan Ridley fumble and returned it 74 yards for a Bills Touchdown that cut the lead to 10-7. Later on in the 2nd quarter Brady puts the Patriots back up by 10 points on another touchdown pass to Julian Edleman, the Pats were now up 17-7. Just before the quarter ended EJ Manuel found Robert Woods for an 18 yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 17-14 at halftime.

Early on to open up the 3^rd quarter EJ Manuel leads his team 80 yards down the field and finds Stevie Johnson for an 18 yard Touch down pass to give the Bills a 21-17 lead. In the 4^th quarter the Pats played from behind and needed 2 field goals to take the lead. Stephen Gostowski hit a 33 and 35 yard field goals to give the Patriots their 1^st win of 2013 and the give the Bills their 19^th loss in their last 20 ames vs the Patriots.

Manuel Finds Rhythm

Usually against a team like the New England Patriots some rookie quarterbacks would put pressure on themselves to do to much but EJ Manuel looked poised from the start. The Former Seminole went 18-27 for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Game #2- Miami Dolphins:23 @ Cleveland Browns:10

This off season the Dolphins focused on surrounding quarterback Ryan Tannehill with more weapons by signing guys like Brandon Gibson and Mike Wallace. So far it seems to have payed off with Tannehill throwing for 272 yards really spreading the ball around. While he still threw to Brian Hartline a lot he still managed to complete 7 passes to Brandon Gibson and 5 to Charles Clay. It was great to see him spreading the ball around and taking a few shots down the field. While there were many things to critique as far as offensive fluidity the Dolphins looked decent on offense.

Brian Hartline had a huge day today with his 9 receptions, 114 yards and 1 touchdown. He is Tannehill's favorite receiver and the Dolphins could use more games like this from him as the season moves along. 2 major concerns I have for the Dolphins though is 1. pass protection and 2. running game. Before Tannhill established his rhythm in the 2^nd half he had a hard time hitting his receivers due to pressure from the Browns defense who collected 4 sacks and tons of pressure on him. It goes without saying that the o-line must improve once they start playing better teams. In addition to that the run game was non existent with Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas combining for 17 yards on 18 carries. In the NFL you need a respectable run game in order to win at a high level and 18 rushing yards from your 2 starting running backs is not the production Miami is looking for.

The Dolphins defense was brilliant as a unit today collecting 6 sacks and 3 interceptions. Cameron Wake as usual led the charge for the defense collecting 2.5 sacks and being that dominant player he has proven himself to be over the last few seasons. There was pressure and everybody executed pretty well for most of the game but the Dolphins Defense is usually the strong suit of the team, lets see how consistent they can stay.

Cameron Wake with his 2.5 sacks today notched the 10^th multi sack game of his career. Wake has collected more Sacks then any Dolphins player over the last 4 seasons.

Out Of Sync

Mike Wallace was the big money signing for the Dolphins in the off season and Sunday vs Cleveland looked out of sync with Quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Its early in the year so this can still be fixed but Mike Wallace must be more of a factor in the Miami offense 15 yards on 1 catch just won't cut it. Personally I think inability to establish the run game prevented any kind of play action passing situations for Wallace & Tannehill, once that gets straightened out then we will see Wallace doing what he usually does.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers:17 @ New York Jets:18

In the return of Darrelle Revis back to New York the Buccaneers were stunned by Geno Smith and the Jets. With little to no time left on the clock Jets Rookie QB told his teammates down by 2 with a bunch yards to gain that the game was not over. It turns out he was right on a scramble outside the pocket Lavonte David of the Buccaneers was flagged for unnecessary roughness which happen to move the Jets 15 yards up the field and led to a Nick Folk 48 yard game winning field goal.

The Bucaneers had than 10 penalties throughout the course of this game but that still doesn’t take away from what Geno Smith did on the field today. He did a good job of spreading the ball around the field as 4 receivers had 3 receptions or more. It wasn't pretty but its still what you would want to start the season if your the New York jets.

Jets Need To Be Cautious With Geno Smith

Geno Smith will start Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and while that sounds like an exciting alternative to Mark Sanchez and the mediocre results of the past few seasons, it's also something that should scare Jets fans immensely.

Because many fans see this Jets team as weak on both sides of the ball, they say that they might as well go ahead and let Smith play to see what he can do, and hope he develops even quicker because of the immediate playing time. This couldn't be any further from true, and what they're doing may wind up hurting Geno for the rest of his career.

We've seen it time and time again in the NFL, where young quarterbacks are thrown to the wolves too early on, and they're just not able to get their confidence back. This is a killer for development, and the Jets need to proceed with caution.

Let me take you back to 2002. David Carr was coming off of a senior season at Fresno State where he lead his team to a 9-5 record and totaled 4299 passing yards along with 42 touchdowns. This had gained him a considerable amount of hype, and had draft reports saying that "he could make every throw in the book" and that "Not only can he thread the needle with his throws, but he also knows how to put the proper touch on his passes when needed. He is very competitive and a natural leader who makes the players around him better."

Of course, there were downsides, "Because he has such a strong arm, Carr will try and force passes into tight coverage." But the Houstan Texans overlooked these flaws and took him with their first ever draft pick.

We all know how this panned out, as Carr became a human tackling dummy behind the porous offensive line of the Texans, and because he had no credible options at running back, tight end, or wide receiver. He got sacked an NFL-record 76 times his rookie year, and this really just destroyed him for the rest of his career. His weakness going into the draft (forcing throws) was heightened because he knew that he had to try and make something happen before he got leveled. He was also forced to throw a lot because, at that time, the Texans defense was weak and they were often playing catch-up.

How does Geno Smith relate to David Carr, though? Well, he's in a strikingly similar position. Much like Carr, Smith is a player who should be sitting on the bench in his first year or two just to work the kinks out of his game and get adjusted to the pace of the NFL. 

The Jets offense, to put it nicely, is going to be anemic. They were the 5th-lowest scoring team in the league last year, and they'll more than likely drop into the bottom 3 this season. The offensive line is pretty solid as far as run blocking goes, but it has quite a few question marks when in pass protection. 

The options for Smith to throw to are are really not all that appealing, either, as an injured Santonio Holmes headlines an underwhelming group of receivers. Chris Ivory should be a nice addition in the backfield, but there's no doubt about it, the Jets are going to have to be going to the air early and often.

The Andrew Luck's and Robert Griffin's of the world are few and far between, and I feel like the Jets are expecting way too much out of him, way too soon.

He's going to take a lot of hits, and you just have to hope that this won't hurt him like it hurt David Carr. This is the man that represents the future for the New York Jets, and you have to wonder if Rex Ryan is risking Smith's future because he knows it's the only chance to save his own.

Darrelle Revis vs Richard Sherman: Who's Better?

Recently, on Twitter, the two of the league's best Cornerbacks had a memorable twitter beef. It went like this:

A seemingly harmless question from @rpchudgar during a Q&A that @RSherman_25 was doing for his fans, sparked this argument from the two cornerbacks.

Point: Darrelle Revis

In the 2012-13 NFL Playoff game, the Seahawks vs the Falcons, Roddy White got 5 reecptions for 76 yards, including a 47-yard TD reception, with (drum roll please) Sherman covering him. That is what Revis is referring to.

During the time Revis tweeted those 4 tweets, Sherman was on a flight. After getting off of it, he responded:

To top it off...

As you can see, Richard Sherman clearly won this argument, with Darrelle Revis' dismissiveness and Sherman's finish. Remind me not to get into an argument with Richard Sherman... ever.

But, is he going to win the debate between him between the best Cornerback in the NFL?

Darrelle Revis or Richard Sherman? Who is the better shutdown corner? This is a newly introduced topic from the 2012-13 NFL season that has sparked numerous debates. Who do I think is better? I will be giving a breakdown and comparison of each player to finally figure out who is better. Is it Revis? Sherman? Here it goes. 

Let's start off with the 4-year veteran in Darrelle Revis, famous for the Revis Island term.
Since his astounding 2009 season where he picked off 6 passes along with 31 passes defended and 47 total tackles which made his player value a staggering 22, he has been considered the best Cornerback in the NFL and for good reason too. His stats have gone down but that's only because team's are afraid to throw his way. With his targets going down, Revis has become very opportunistic when the pigskin is thrown his way, including a 100-yard Interception for a TD, tying the NFL record.

Revis is so good that he contained the 08' Randy Moss to 2 receptions for 22 yards.

Unfortunately, Darrelle Revis suffered an ACL tear to his left knee in the 2012 season and we don't know if he'll ever be the same. However, it is Darrelle Revis so you got to give him the benefit of the doubt. 

Now onto Richard Sherman. The 6'3 Sherman came into this league in 2011, drafted by the Seahawks with the 54th pick of the 5th round, with something to prove. He destroyed all expectations in his first season and his 2012 campaign was only better.

In 2012, Sherman picked off 8 passes, including one for the score, 24 passes defended, 3 Forced Fumbles, 1 Sack and 53 total tackles making his season player value at 18, just a tick below Revis'.

Finally, comparing these two stars. Darrelle Revis and Richard Sherman's best seasons to date were somewhat similar and almost as equally dominant. In 2009, teams just completed 36.9% of their passes thrown to whoever Revis was covering and a 32.3 passer rating. Revis' 2009 could be the best season of all-time for a corner. Sherman's 2012 season saw him holding teams to a completion percentage of 41.7% and a 41.1 passer rating. Richard Sherman did have more picks than Darrelle Revis, 8-6 in the cornerbacks best season's. The whole thing about Revis not getting thrown to as much may be true but compared to Sherman, team's throw the ball to them almost the same. In Sherman's 2012 season, he was only targeted 2 more times compared to Revis' 2011 campaign and had double the picks, 8-4. Richard Sherman may have better ball skills than Darrelle Revis but the thing going for Revis is that he doesn't go for the INT as much as Sherman and looks to swot down the ball much more, unlike him. Every season, other than his rookie and sophomore years, Revis has had a slightly less better season than Richard Sherman's 2012, with the unfathomable 2009 season being the only one better. Sherman was a better rookie and sophomore than Revis and is on a fast track to become the best corner in the NFL. 

However, that exclusive title belongs to the owner of Revis Island himself, Darrelle Revis. Richard Sherman will have the title of being the best in a couple seasons but at this moment, Darrelle Revis is sitting high in the sky.

MNF is back!

Its that time of year again Monday Night Football. A annual American Pastime for 16 weeks which will give us many thrills,chills and memorable moments. Weather your watching the game in the solitude of your home or in a crowd of football fans at a sports bar bombarded by Chicken wings and beer Monday night Football is always a good time. Its more then a game its become an American Tradition in many households like mine. Today its back with a great double header. We got Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens taking on A.J Green in the 1st game at 7pm. Then in the 2nd game we have Darren Mcfadden and the Oakland Raiders taking on Phillip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers in a Division match up. That’s a pretty good way to kick off MNF if you ask me. Hopefully we will get some great moments this season like we have gotten in the past. MNF has given us some of the most sintulating football in league history. From The New York Jets and the “Monday Night Miracle” victory over the Miami Dolphins to dominating performances like the “Monday Night massacre” where the Seattle Seahwaks dominated the Philadelphia Eagles  42-0 Monday Night Football is never short on great moments good or bad. MNF has given us memorable quotations from the likes of  Dennis Green “They were who we thought they were AND WE LET EM OFF DA HOOK”!! Following a massive comeback by the Chicago Bears back in 2006. Monday Night Football is a memory lane even for the bone headed plays like Desean Jacksons TD that he prevented from happening in a Cowboys game vs. Eagels a few years ago. Weather good or bad MNF will leave football fans craving for more and will continue to thrill. So buckle up and brace yourself for Hank Williams too ask Americas favorite question “ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL”?!!. Its game time folks so enjoy it with your friends and family.

Throwback Thursday: "Broadway" Joe Namath

Today is Thursday and you already know that means it’s throwback Thursday here at the Tru school. Just want to thank everybody who read and gave me love on last weeks article on Muggsy Bouges, This week though we take a look at the Hall of Fame Super bowl champion  “Broadway” Joe Namath.

Very few players represent a standard that future players need to live up too but when you play for the NY Jets and you start at quarterback you will always be compared to Joe Namath. He is the Gold standard for anybody who puts on a uniform to play QB New York Jets. Namath in many ways represents New york city while he achieved greatness on the gridiron his blooming personality and appeal to women allowed him to get a career in acting. Appearing on shows such as the Brady Bunch Namath earned the nickname “Broadway”. As much as he was Broadway he was still a football player. He was most famous for his super bowl 3 prediction when he came out and guaranteed a victory against the heavily favored Baltimore Colts. Joe earned lots of criticism and people thought he was crazy for saying that. When the clock was done ticking and the smoke had cleared Joe “Broadway” Namath arose victorious shocking the sports world in what was called “The greatest upset in pro football history”. When the game ended Namath stormed off the field rasing his right hand running towards the tunnel at the orange bowl his hand had the #1 telling the Miami crowd that his Jets were the champs. He was later named the super bowl 3 MVP. Jets fans usually have goose bumbs when talking about him. Why wouldn’t they? He brought the organization its 1st and only Vince Lombardi trophie. Namath represents a lot of what the Jets and New York is full of and that’s a bunch of Underdogs who triumph over all the overbearing odds too achieve a common goal. That goal is too simply be called “Champion”
