Jose Fernandez Is The New Favorite For Rookie Of The Year

After his 2 starts this week, Jose Fernandez has become the front runner for National League Rookie of the year. For a Marlins team that has been horrendous this season, Fernandez has been a model of consistency. At the age of 21, Jose Fernandez has already put his name in the same sentence of elite pitchers in the game today.

Strength In Numbers

In his rookie season, after only pitching 1 year of class A-ball, Jose Fernandez is 3^rd in ERA (MLB) with an ERA of (2.30), behind only fellow rookie Matt Harvey (2.27) and Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (1.72). With a 10-5 win/loss record, the Marlins ace has a higher winning percentage of (.667) than Kershaw (.650). KJ In the category of strikeouts per 9 innings. Fernandez at (9.73) strikeouts per 9 innings is higher than Adam Wainwright (8.24) and Felix Hernandez (9.36). To go along with all of that his opponent batting average of (.188) is better than MLB strikeout leader Yu Darvish (.191).

Those stats would be impressive for anybody but for a rookie playing on a very offensively challenged ball club they look even greater. To appreciate how great Fernandez has been this season you have to really know how bad the Marlins offense is. So like I stated earlier, the rookie phenom has a 10-5 record, which is impressive playing for the Marlins. As a collective offense, the Marlins don't strike fear into the hearts of many opponents, ranking dead last in runs scored (415) and hits (997). We are in late August, heading into the last month of the season, and the Marlins still are the only team that doesn’t have 1,000 hits as a team yet. So the fact the Jose Fernandez has so little to work with from his offense and is posting the numbers he has, speaks volumes to what he is accomplishing in his rookie season.

Puig Who?

Last Monday against the red hot fellow Cuban rookie sensation Yasiel Puig and the LA Dodgers Jose Fernandez validated himself to the baseball world as the 2013 National League rookie of the year. Marlins Park was more filled than usual with both Cuban rookie phenoms facing off against each other, Miami's large Cuban community came to see which one would shine the most. Like most of the baseball world they came to see Puig but were left impressed with Fernandez as he shut down the Dodger order going 6 innings, giving up only 4 hits, 1 earned run and collecting 8 strikeouts in a 6-2 Marlins victory over the Dodgers. Puig went 0-4 against Fernandez with a strikeout, looking very uncomfortable. At times Puig didn't even look like a big league hitter. He even had more hits then Yasiel hitting a single to center field in the 3^rd inning. So against baseball's hottest name Fernandez dominated and proved against the media's favorite rookie why he is the real rookie of the year.

No Contest

Barring a massive meltdown in September, Jose Fernandez will be the National League rookie of the year. If he maintains this kind of consistency through the whole entire month of September, he may even get some Cy Young consideration. One series that could really do a lot for Fernandez as far as Cy Young consideration goes is the September 27-29 series vs Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers. If he gets the start, he will be taking on baseball's best offense in Detroit, which leads the league in runs scored at (615). Not to mention the best hitter on the whole planet Miguel Cabrera, who won the triple crown last season. If he has a start against them like he did against the Dodgers, then it will be tough to not get Cy Young consideration. As far as the rookie of the year award goes, he has already won it, he's been the most consistent rookie from start to finish. Plus I think it would be incredibly hypocritical of baseball to give Puig the rookie of the year award, when they didn't let him participate in the all-star game. As well as giving it to him over a guy who made the all-star team and has been here all year long. So it will be interesting to see if baseball can stay consistent as far as what they believe in. If Jose Fernandez doesn’t win rookie of the year then I believe that all this is fixed and they are Puig lovers.

Going to keep this short and sweet its Monday I got 1 week before college starts so this is a great time to take in baseball game. Don't go to that many Marlins game now compared to when they played at Dolphin Stadium but I think I picked a good one today.

The Marlins are horrible this year and don't have much going for them on offense but we have a lot of nice young pitchers. At the forefront of our plethora of young arms is rookie sensation Jose Fernandez who continues to prove why he is one of the best young pitchers in the game. Tonight he is tasked with taking on one of the hottest teams in baseball in the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Match up I’m really looking forward to seeing all night is Fernandez vs Yasiel Puig . Puig is the hottest thing going in baseball right now outside of Miguel Cabrera so to see arguably the 2 best rookies this season match up is interesting. Along with all that Fernandez has to attack the rest of the Dodger order with guys like Matt Kemp andAdrian Gonzalez. So hoping for a great game, a Marlins win and a few Hanley Ramirez strikeouts....LETS GO MARLINS!!

Jose Fernandez Is A Big Time Pitcher

The Miami Marlins are by no stretch of the imagination this year a good baseball team but like any struggling team they have a few bright spots and the brightest happens to come in the form of rookie 21 year old right hand pitcher Jose Fernandez. Here is some background Fernandez.

• Drafted 14^th overall in 2011 by the Marlins
• Never picthed above A ball before this season started
• Became only the 7^th player in MLB history under the age of 21 to record at least 8 strikeouts in his debut since 1916
• Named an to the all-star game at 20 years old
• Struck out Dustin Pedroia and Chris Davis at the all-star game.

So odds are you aren't familiar with Jose Fernandez but that’s ok because most of the baseball world is slowly but surely figuring out who he is. Prior to the season starting the Marlins had a shortage of arms in the starting rotation so they rushed Fernandez to the big leagues and named him as the opening day starter. I was very critical of that move because this was a guy who hadn't pitched above A ball and now he his the opening day starter against the New York Mets, it's a pretty big jump. Fernandez quickly put to bed any doubt of good he would be for the rest of the season with a performance of 5 innings pitched 3 hits, 1 earned run and 8 strikeouts.

When you watch him pitch Fernandez does a great job establishing his fastball command and sets up his secondary pitches very well. Many baseball experts have compared Fernandez to Seattle Mariners all-star Felix Hernandez. People who aren't familiar with Fernandez might disagree but if you watch both of them pitch they have a lot of similarities. Fernandez like King Felix sets up hitters very well and can bury you with multiple pitches. He can thrown it by you with his fats ball or paint the outside corner with his curve ball. The Comparison is valid.

Statistically when you look at Jose Fernandez he is even more impressive. He has an 8-5 record on the worst team in the national league. The Marlins are not an offensive juggernaut in fact its hard to get run support when the whole team collectively has scored the 363 runs the entire season which ranks them dead last in baseball. So to be 3 games over 500 as a pitcher for them is impressive. Recently in the last few weeks he did something very historic. In his July 28^th and August 2^nd starts he faced 2 quality teams in the National league leading Pittsburgh Pirates and then then Cleveland Indians who are in the playoff hunt. In his start against the Pirates he has a very good outing going 8 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits with 13 strikeouts for a win. You think to yourself “ wow he can't pitch any better then that” well your wrong. Very next start against the Indians he goes 8 innings only allows 3 hits, collects 14 strikeouts and shuts out the Indians. So do the math 14+13=27 Jose Fernandez in 2 starts struck out 27 hitters. Thats just ridiculous for a guy his age to be doing that. In doing that he put his name in some elite company (see tweets below).

As you can see Fernandez put his name in same company with some former all-stars but he also has his opponents in aw of him. Rays manager Joe Maddon who is one of the best in baseball praised Fernandez.

 So the word on Jose Fernandez is finally getting out and if healthy it looks like the Marlins have an ace for years to come. The only question is how many years before he gets traded?

How Yasiel Puig In 2013 Reminds Me Of Miguel Cabrera In 2003

Yasiel Puig has provided an instant boost to the morale of the Dodgers since he set foot inside the Dodger clubhouse. They were struggling at the beginning of June at 24-32 with the season slowly but surely going down the tubes- enter Yasiel Puig and fast forward about a month and a half later and the Dodgers now sit atop the NL West division at 53-47 a lot of the Dodgers turnaround could be attributed to the energy that Puig has brought to the line up. It has made players around him start playing better and the Dodgers look like the team people expected before the season started. Now I have seen this same type of energy and impact before and it happened to come in the form of Miguel Cabrera 10 years ago back in 2003 for the world champion Florida Marlins.

Although Puig now and Cabrera then are 2 different kind of players the energy and impact both of them brought to their respective ball clubs is vastly similar. Puig on June 3^rd made his major league debut vs the San Diego Padres for a struggling Dodgers team at 24-32 lingering towards the bottom of the NL West. Puig went 2-4 and had an outfield assists to end the game on a double play resulting in a Dodgers win. Miguel Cabrera on June 20^th 2003 got his 1^st start in the big leagues although the production of that game isn't as great as Puig's what he did produce matches Yasiel. Cabrera went 1-5 in that game but that 1 hit which was his 1^st in what is now a great major league career was a walk off home run in the 11^th inning off of Al Levine which gave the Marlins a 3-1 win over the Devil Rays. From that point forward the Marlins looked like an entirely different ball club. They played a lot looser and with a lot more energy and after May 23^rd 2003 the Marlins compiled a 72-42 record which was best in baseball and led them to a 91-71 finish and a wild card berth which ultimately led them to a World Series championship over the New York Yankees. Cabrera had a lot to do with the Marlins great production after May 23^rd. Puig Like Cabrera in 03 has been a huge reason that the Dodgers since his arrival on June 3^rd are 30-15 up to this point.

Puig and Cabrera like I said earlier are much different players and Puig right now at 22 is 2 years older than Cabrera in 2003 he was 20. The energy they both brought to the teams they played for are very alike in my eyes. The only question now is if the Dodgers make the playoffs will the Impact that Puig has had here in 2013 wind up in resulting in the same way as Cabrera in 2003 when the Marlins won the world series?? I guess only time will tell.

It's Time For Some Baseball

Now that basketball season is over and I don't have to focus on the media circus that is the Miami Heat the blog will now be changing its focus to baseball. I will still write things about basketball with the draft and summer league coming out but it's time to focus on Americas past time the way I should be. Outside of the Marlins who I follow because they are my team I was very oblivious to most things going on in the MLB this season. I'm very happy my Marlins are playing better baseball winning 5 out of their last 8 against the Cardinals,D-Backs and Giants.

I'm excited to see if Miguel Cabrera can repeat and win the triple crown again as he currently leads in the batting average and RBI categories he is still chasing Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis who has 27 homeruns to Cabrera's 20. I think Miggy who is one of the most consistent hitters we have ever seen in baseball history will be right there when it's all said and done for the repeat.

I'm definitely excited to see if Giancarlo Stanton will be in the home run derby this season. As most baseball fans know his batting practices alone are a homerun derby and he posses once in a life time power that most people aren't really accustom to seeing so him at an event like the homerun derby would be nothing but a treat for the fans of the MLB.

Of course I will still have my card posts but I'm going to incorporate other pieces of exclusive memorabilia that I feel would be cool to share with you guys. So far all my guys here who collect baseball memorabilia /Cards and all that good stuff you will love all the stuff coming up.

The Day I Knew Baseball Season Would Suck

Before Baseball season even began As a Marlins fan I knew I got dealt with a pretty bad hand with our 3^rd firesale in franchise history (Thanks Pinhead Jeffery Loria and Midget Lucky Charms wannabe David Sampson) . I knew we would lack the talent to match up with our division Rivals such as the Nats, Phillies, Braves. I knew all of that but something happened to me where I knew that this season woule be awful, let me explain.

I went to the Dollar Store after getting a fresh much needed haircut last Sunday to purchase some baseball cards. I purchased 4 Packs of Topps 2013 and when opening the packs I was giddy with excitement to have new cards. I am Never one to believe in Omans or signs but when going through my very 1^st pack of Topps 2013 this year I came across these 2 cards back to back

Yes that is Josh Johnson and Adeiny Hechavarria! I saw this and thought that the baseball gods were playing some sick mind game with my head to put those two cards in the same pack right next to each other.

If you Don’t know then let me inform you those two players are related because of that big trade that took place between the Marlins and the Bluejays. It sent them one of my favorite pitchers, Jose Reyes, Emilio Bonifacio and Mark Buehrle a for basically a bunch of young minor league players.

Seeing this cards in the same pack just let me know what thousands upon Millions already know which is that the Miami Marlins will suck this year.

2007 Topps Cosigners Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis Autograph

2007 was a great year for collecting overall I was into a lot of dope sets that year Spectrum, Allen&ginter as well as Topps Co-Signers. I was trying all kinds of different sets and on a random Saturday afternoon I took a trip down to Aventura mall and at the now defunct BC Sports card shop I purchased my 1^st Pack of Topps Co-signers. As I opened the pack and surveyed the cards real quick One particular card caught my eye. I’m a huge Marlins fan and at the time there were no 2 players I liked more then Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. So when I saw and realized that in my hand I was holding an autograph with 2 of my favorite Players to Ever wear the Black and Teal I began jumping for joy. To this day this card remains among my favorites In my collection.

Opening Day Joy

As I sit here in My Marlins jersey the day Before most of the teams start play on Opening Day in Major League Baseball I can't help but think of the countless amount of fans around the world waiting to see they're teams play tomorrow. It has a Christmas like feel to it, where you can not sleep and keep tossing and turning. Baseball has a way of bringing the kid out in all of us and Opening day is big deal in my life. I still have fond memories of going to Sun Life/Pro Player stadium hours before gametime waiting to get autographs from my favorite players like Miguel Cabrera, Dontrelle Willis and Luis Castillo. I can't help but think of the countless amount of kids that will fall in Love with the game tommorrow and the countless amount of memories that will be created.

One of the great Joy's of opening day for many kids is missing school and playing hookie for the day with your dad for a trip to the ballpark. You can't really describe that feeling when you get those tickets in your hand, walk through those turnstiles and smell the aroma of Peanuts and Cracker jacks for the first time in spring. You Can't describe it until you are holding it in your hand and catch your 1^st glimpse of your local baseball cathedral on the way to your seats.

Baseball's Opening day represents a renewed sense of hope for fans and players alike. Every team will start off with a 0-0 record and every park will be soldout. New players will familiarize themselves with new teams and new fans will get familiar with new smells, sights and experiences at the ballpark. So whether you are the San Francisco Giants coming off a World Series Championship or the Houston Astros Coming off a franchise worst season every team will start off with a clean slate. When the teams are introduced,Fireworks go off and National anthem is sung just know it's time to play ball.

If your a nutritionist then consider tomorrow your cheat day substitute salad with Hot dogs and Peanuts and plop your behind down in your seats and prepare for the start of Baseball season. If you have Cheap seats or luxury seats remember what opening day and baseball are about-Kids and the one still inside of you

Throwback Thursday: 2003 Florida Marlins

In life we do a lot of looking back and over the course of life we say things like “Wow that was ten years ago” this is one of those times. In the year of 2003 I was 8 years old attending Dania Elementary with not a care in the world. It was also the year that My childhood's favorite baseball team captured a World Series when the underdog Florida Marlins shocked the World by beating the powerhouse New York Yankees in 6 games. It has already been 10 years and I remember it like yesterday celebrating in the streets of Miami.

The 2003 Florida Marlins are one of the reasons I fell in love with sports they proved the world wrong and made the media look like idiots who thought the match up between them and the Yankees was a mismatch. Looking back on it now that Team was very well structured from top to bottom in all facets of the game.

At the Top you had the Speed Duo of Luis Castillo and Juan Pierre who combined for 391 Hits 76 stolen bases 199 runs scored while batting well over 300. They were Perfect table setters for guys Like Mike Lowell Pudge Rodriguez,Derek Lee to Knock them in and they did. They were a productive line up who played small ball and manufactured runs.

But things didn't start all fine and dandy for the fish they got off to a 16-22 start which led to the firing of Jeff Torberg. Jack Mckeon was summoned to take place of Torberg, “Trader Jack” as he is known had been in Baseball longer then most of the Young Marlins roster had been alive. The team went an Impressive 75-49 under Jack which added up to a 91-71 record and a Wild Card Birth. They got there by playing loose, Hard and more importantly playing the game the right way.

In the Middle of that 75-49 record for Jack Mckeon were 2 young mid-season rookie Call-ups named Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis that Heavily contributed to the success of the 03 Marlins. Cabrera a 20 year old kid at the time exploded on the Scene with an 11^th inning walk off Homerun off of Al Levine. Dontrelle Willis Electrified South Florida and the rest of the MLB with his high unorthodox leg kick which led him to a 14-6 record, All-Star Appearance and the 2003 Rookie of the year award. The Kid from Oakland was a fan favorite, The Kid from Venezuela was a young superstar in the making. The 2 kids were some of the best players to ever put on a Marlins jersey.

The Post season for the 2003 Marlins was filled with Signature moments. From the Collision at the plate between Pudge and J.T Snow in the Division series to Steve Bartman the Marlins seem to have everything going for them. If you look at the 3 teams the Marlins beat in the post season they feature the Games most prolific stars of the last 15 years (Derek Jeter, Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa). All 3 series had the opposing teams heavily favored over Florida but we all know how that ended.

The success of the team was short lived though as owner Jeffery Loria had most of the team gone before the start of the 2006 season. The Legacy of this team still remains though.

Still a Kids game:Little League World Series

Its late August and the stretch run for Major League Baseballs pennant races are upon us. Players will be scrutinized and embraced by thousands of people in the next few months lets forget all about the MLB just for a second. Remember being 9 years old swinging a baseball bat in your backyard with your friends emulating your favorite players swing? I do and watching the little league world series these past few days took me back too the spirit and fun of baseball. Watching these young and very talented young kids enjoyment and passion for the game really took me back to what baseball is really about. Its not about performing up too your contract or trying to get endorsement deals, Its all about having fun, Playing the game too the best of your ability and trying to win. If you ever forgot why you loved the great game of Baseball then all you had too do is watch the Little League World series and im 150% sure that you would be quickly reminded of why you love it and memories of your playing days would come back. I think we as a society can learn from watching the Little League World Series. We can learn or even relearn that if you don’t love what your doing in the first place then don’t do it at all. We can learn how too have fun. We can learn why Baseball is still great and what the core values about the sport truly are and that even though this is played by adults it is still a kids game. Being a Marlins fan has been a frustrating thing this season because they don’t even look like they are having any fun playing a kids game for millions of dollars, So when I would tune in to Espn in the afternoon too watch kids from the opposite sides of the world play the game with so many smiles and such high intensity it was incredibly refreshing. One thing that really captivated me this past Little League World Series was seeing the poverty stricken country Uganda  play the game with such class and enjoyment. Its mind boggling too me that kids who come from a third world country have so many things they could dwell or complain about can find something like baseball play it at a high level and use it as an outlet for greater things in there life. A country like Uganda even being in the event is really a testament too the continued growth of the sport. So next time you walk by your local baseball field and you see young kids playing the game of baseball I would advise you to stop and watch for a little bit you might actually learn something from the young kids passion for the game. So next time you see an MLB player not playing the game hard for Millions of Dollars remember what baseball is really about. This is, was and will ALWAYS be a Kids game! 

Marlins Park (My Take)

Marlins Park 2012-Present

We came along way as fans of the marlins going from the slums of sun life stadium to the art deco beauty of the brand new Marlins Park. In the 1st season at the brand new digs ive had the privallege of attending 4 games this season (Most of them losses). Let me tell you the difference is night and day from the food, Concourse, seat quality, the fan experience at Marlins park is much better then what I experienced at pro player stadium/sun life for 12 years of my life. When you walk around the park  there is a buzz and energy I rarely ever felt at that football stadium. Its great  too walk into a park where this is more people wearing Marlins gear then opposing teams gear. I have a lot of love for our old home, It treated us to 2 world championships in 1997,03 and his home to a lot of my childhood but marlins park is more fan friendly and in the long run that’s truly matters.

Transportation

A big concern coming into the new park was transportation. Parking garages are for season ticket holders only so if you are coming too the game and aren’t a season ticket holder your best bet is too use one of the lots on various business plazas and parking lots.. They usually aren’t that that pricy and range from 5-15%. If you don’t have a car like my father and I then you can take the tri-rail to the game. Let me give you a HUGE warning that the learning the correct route is confusing and so is figuring out which side  to stand on at the station, it took me 4 games to really figure it out. Once you get it down though it is faster then a car and tri-rail and metro rail tickets combined are 11.25$ estimated and should be sure to save your money on gas. After the ballgame concludes there will be trains waiting for fans at train station.


Outside of the park

If you get off culmer station like I do and walk to the park that commute  is a fun picturesq route that offers alternatives to the pricey ballpark food. The walk is 10-15 minutes long and there is a Winn  Dixie super market before you get too the park. At Winn Dixie  they offer  a wide assortment of Spanish food such as empanadas and other cultured Cuban food. What you get there for 13$ will fill you up more then 13$ at the ballpark. After you get past Winn Dixie you will cross the street ahead and make your way onto the bridge where if you look to your left you will see the Miami skyline. Once you actually get too Marlins Park there are a few things too do. Around stadium are vendors who sell hot dogs, sodas, water and my favorite arepas. Around the ballpark are several stores like metro pcs and ever delightful Yo Blendz yogurt shop which you won’t find in the ballpark. The main store outside of Marlins Park is the official team store which is where I scored this sweet Justin Ruggiano T-Shirt.  There is all of that and towards the main entrance is the video board which usually has on other sporting events too keep fans entertained while waiting for the gates to open.

When you walk into Marlins Park you are hit by an array of color and smells of exceptional food. Like I said earlier I’ve had the privallege of attending 4 games this season (Most of them loses) and have seen the park from many angles. Let me first start off by saying no matter where you sit the view is intiamte and seat quality is bar none the best in baseball. There are many features that make this ballpark unique and very Miami. First and foremost lets start off with the homerun feature in left-center field (which is hideous) that thing looks like one giant over priced bag of skittles mashed up into a sculpture. No other park in baseball has something so colorfully hideous to obstruct players view but the art deco colors make it very Miami. Another thing I absolutely love is the bobblehead musuem which features thousands of bobbleheads from all 30 MLB teams. My personal favorite bobblehead in the musuem is of former Marlins Great Luis Castillo. Another cool thing you can do is walk around the park and watch the game at the same time while walking through the promenade level. While walking in Left field you will spot the Budweiser bar where you can stand and watch the from a great view without a ticket and mingle with other fans in an outgoing atmosphere. If you have kids and they get bored take them to center field they have video games such as Guitar hero, Gallaga, MLB 2K12 and of course pacman. When you walk into the park there are pictures of the batting order up and  a wall dedicated too a player, That’s pretty cool I like knowing whos batting before intros so I can analyze the matchups as a fan.

Food the ballpark is a great thing. At Marlins Park from what I had to grub on I can tell you this placed gets an A+ in that department when you go too the park its best to go to the taste of Miami which like Winn-Dixie offers a plethora of Cuban food and won’t dissapoint. If your not into Cuban food head over too Miami Mex and get the steak tacos those things are perfect but pricey as heck at 13$ for 2 tacos. If you sit in the club level and have a sweet tooth get the gelato the quality is great but the amount is scarce. Marlins Park is a place where you can’t lose when it comes too food choices.

As great as the park is I have a few problems. Of course there is the disaster on the field that has us in last place. I told Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria when taking the picture above “Lets get this thing turned around”. “Most definetly “ He replied and gave my dad props on the throwback Dontrelle Willis Jersey he was sporting that night. Another problem is I don’t see too many things that comemorate or celebrate our history, hopefully that changes. This park is amazing and if we can fix the product on the field and match the quality of female dancers at the Clevelander then we are in business
